Privacy Policy

This policy explains how NIPPOCHAT (the mobile app and the website at nippochat.com) collects, uses, shares and protects your personal information, and the choices you have. It is written to comply with Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) and the requirements of the app stores where NIPPOCHAT is distributed.

1. Who is responsible

NIPPOCHAT is operated by Mike Henri, an individual based in Nagoya, Japan (the "operator", "we"). For any privacy question or request, contact privacy@nippochat.com.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide

• Account: email address and password (stored only as a secure hash). If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google.
• Profile: display name, date of birth, bio, relationship intentions, interests, languages, the location you choose to show (such as city and country), avatar, cover image, and profile photos and videos, together with your visibility settings.
• Content: posts with photos or videos, comments, likes, saves and follows.
• Messages: messages you send in chat rooms and in direct conversations, including attachments and reactions.
• Interactions: interest you express in other profiles, and users you block.
• Requests you send us: emails and the information they contain.

Information collected automatically

• Usage data: posts you view and actions you take in the app, used to operate and personalise your feed.
• Technical and security data: login sessions, device and app information, IP address, and security events (for example, suspicious sign-in attempts) recorded in server logs.

Processed only on your device

• The post editor can detect faces and separate the subject from the background to help you edit photos. This analysis runs entirely on your device and is not sent to our servers. Only the final image you choose to publish is uploaded.
• The camera is used only when you choose to take a photo or video.

We do not use advertising SDKs or third-party analytics tracking in the app, and we do not sell your personal information.

3. How we use your information

• To create and secure your account, verify your email and let you reset your password.
• To show your profile and content to other users according to your settings, and to show you profiles and posts.
• To deliver messages and, when you use the feature, translate messages and comments into your language.
• To personalise and rank your feed.
• To keep the service safe: preventing fraud, spam and abuse, enforcing our rules, and investigating reports.
• To respond to your requests and communicate important changes.
• To comply with legal obligations.

4. What other users can see

Your display name, age, profile photos and videos, bio, intentions, interests, languages and the location you choose to show are visible to other users when your profile is discoverable. Posts and comments are visible to other users. Messages are visible to the participants of the conversation or chat room. Your email address and date of birth are never shown to other users.

5. Service providers we share data with

We share personal information only with providers that process it on our behalf to run NIPPOCHAT, or when required by law.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights and safety of users or others, or as part of a transfer of the service (see section 12).

6. International transfers

Our main servers, database and media storage are located in Japan. Some providers listed above process data in the United States. The United States does not have a data protection regime recognised by Japan as equivalent. These providers are contractually bound to protect personal information and to use it only to provide their services to us. You can ask us for more information about these transfers at privacy@nippochat.com.

7. How long we keep your information

We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile is hidden immediately and your personal information, content and messages are deleted within 30 days. Residual copies in backups and security logs are deleted within 90 days. We may keep limited information longer when required by law or to resolve disputes and prevent abuse.

Messages you sent in conversations with other people may remain visible to them as part of the conversation history until that conversation is deleted.

8. Your rights and choices

Under the APPI you may ask us to disclose the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, and to stop using or delete it. You can edit most of your profile directly in the app. For other requests, email privacy@nippochat.com from the address registered to your account. We will respond within a reasonable period.

9. Security

We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), store passwords only as secure hashes, restrict access to personal data to what is necessary to run the service, and monitor for suspicious activity. No system is completely secure, and we will notify affected users and the authorities when required by law in case of a breach.

10. Age requirement

NIPPOCHAT is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and we delete such accounts when we become aware of them.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. When we make significant changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. The effective date at the top shows when it was last updated.

12. Change of operator

NIPPOCHAT is currently operated by an individual. If the service is transferred to a company, your information will be transferred to that company, which will continue to protect it under this policy. We will notify you of the change.
